Feature on Kobe Bryant

His Airness dances on the opposition...
Michael Jordan delighted audiences with his aerial ballet during
the regular season, but in the NBA Finals stepped all over Utah's title hopes
once he put on his Jazz shoes.

And now, Deep Thoughts...
by Jack Handey
"Instead of studying for finals, what about just going to the Bahamas and
catching some rays? Maybe you'll flunk, but you might have flunked anyway;
that's my point."
So I've graduated and gone to work at Oracle... Working life is
definitely different, but I've been keeping myself busy with an
all-around curriculum.
To know me is to know that I love basketball; especially NBA basketball.
As an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley who was
transplanted from the Los Angeles area, it was difficult to stay on top of
the Lakers. So for those Lakers fans thirsting for more or just for
some at all, try ESPNet Sportszone. And from my "Other Links" page, you
can read today's Los Angeles Times (click the pictures above).
And if Sportszone's scoreboard is hosed, there exists
another...
As an EECS Computer Science major, I've known countless all-nighters
and long-nighters. Sometimes I reminisce and work late at Oracle too.
Funny how working folks feel they have to go home and eat each day.
Since 1988, I've held the
Los Angeles Lakers close to my heart...
They haven't won a championship since thanks to my charm.
Check out their
current roster. Watch out for these two guys in the next decade:
Nick Van Exel
"Nick the Quick" led the upstart Lakers past the Seattle SuperSonics in
the first round of the 1995 NBA Playoffs (3-1). The Lakers lost the first
game of the series at Seattle, but Van Exel played all 48 minutes in each
of the next three games--all Laker victories. Coincidence? I don't
think so. Nick, the heart and soul of the Lake Show, now points the
way for what has been dubbed Showtime II, starring Nick, Shaq,
Eddie, and company. Look out for his Reebok commercials and his
forearm shove.
One of the most athletic players in the NBA, he was
voted to the 1995 NBA All-Rookie Team. He also was named MVP of the Rookie
Game in February 1995 at Phoenix after he scored 25 points and had 6 steals.
In 1995-96, Eddie improved his all-around game, sparkling on defense in
particular. Not that he didn't electrify crowds with his dunks.
The 1996-97 season has seen EJ become an All-Star. Exhibiting versatility
at shooting guard and small forward, Eddie has bombed opponents with his
threes and victimized them with his steals. Look for Eddie to be a
mainstay in Los Angeles. But try not to confuse him with Kobe Bryant
on the court. Just stay alert, that's all...

Our still candid soul,
Walking with timid step,
Has not as yet encountered
The edge of the abyss
Into which one so often slips
In these corrupt times.
I've not yet raised
To my innocent lips
The cup of pleasure
From which amorous souls
Drink their fill.

Alex M. Lewandowski Pledge Class of Fall 1994
During the Fall 1994 semester, I pledged Alpha Phi Omega, a national
service fraternity founded upon the principles and ideals of the Boy Scouts
of America way back in 1925 by Frank Reed Horton. Our Cardinal Priciples are
LEADERSHIP, FRIENDSHIP, and SERVICE. (I had to know this stuff for the pledge
test.) Pledging consumed a considerable chunk of my time in the Fall of
1994, but I feel that it has been worth it. I wanted to meet people of noble
ambitions and friendly dispositions while working together to be a positive
force in the community.
I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked with
APO in my eighth and final semester, but I had a significant
project load. Just so everyone knows, I even missed a Warriors home
game versus the Lakers so I could work on a project. Fortunately, I don't
let this missed opportunity eat away at my soul and transform my dreams
into horrid, nightmarish reminders of what could have been.
UCSEE
I was a member of UCSEE's Online/Computer Committee, and we were working on putting
exams online as well as maintaining and revising the UCSEE WWW server.
Browse the UCSEE Home Page.
So this is where I ended up after graduation. I'm part of the
Internet Applications Server Division doing Quality Assurance.
Thanks to the EECS department, I was able to land a summer internship
position with
Tandem Computers
down in Cupertino,
California. I was working in the Hardware Reliability Group.
In the summer of 1996, I worked in Software Development, or Systems
Software Tools. I'm not sure of the exact name of the group because
no one else was too sure, either. In any case, I wrote a Disk Space
Management/Notification Tool to run specifically on Tandem's internal
operating system. I pretty much finished writing the code, but I regret
that I was not able to finish documenting as thoroughly as I had hoped.
And I wanted to add a couple more embellishments to the code. And I
wanted to test it a lot more...
