My most-published photo! A copy of the Guidebook to Adventure goes out to each trek participant to help them prepare for their trek. The 1996 front-cover photo was taken from the tall outcrop of rock above Cimarroncito Reservoir. ("Models" were Lynne Fairchild, Justin Willis, Rob Wood, Eason Bryan, and Chris Willis).

The Tooth of Time

What page of Philmont pictures could start out with anything but a photo of Philmont's most famous (and most overphotographed) landmark? Many treks have an intinerary that allows them to catch sunrise from the Tooth on their last day.

North

Baldy Country
Baldy Mountain
Sunrise on Baldy Mountain

On one of my last days at Philmont, I hiked to the top of Baldy in time to catch the sunset, slept on top (the windiest night I've ever spent), and woke up at around 4 AM to take this picture of the sunrise.

Baldy again, as seen from the road to French Henry camp.
Me, sitting on the porch of the Baldytown trading post — one of the best views in Philmont! (Unfortunately, seen in a picture taken on a hazy day.)

French Henry

Bottles in the window of a cabin at French Henry camp.
French Henry's Cabin

French Henry's real cabin, which isn't at French Henry camp — if you take the trail from French Henry to Copper Park, on the way you'll find a faint and disused trail that leads up the ridge to the cabin. It's supposed to be haunted . . .

Miscellaneous

Miranda Camp, with Baldy in the distance.
One of the many huge meadows in the Valle Vidal, with me included as a handy human guide to scale.

Central

Cypher's Mine

A crew begins a tour of the Contention Mine.
Scouts learn how to work the Cypher's Mine forge.
Unique mobile on the porch of the cabin at Cypher's.
Not Cypher's, but pretty close: taken along the trail from Cito to Cypher's.

Camping Headquarters
Paradoxically, some of my favorite Philpictures (like this rainbow shot) were taken not while I was deep in the backcountry, but just a few steps outside my office at Camping Headquarters.
Another rainbow — this is the only picture of this statue that I've ever liked.
The sign is appropriate . . . taken on the trail that leads to the closing campfire ring where treks spend their last night before heading home.

South

Teepees at Apache Springs
An old wagon just outside the Kit Carson house at Rayado.
One of my best-ever deer photographs, taken just outside the cabin at Crater Lake. (Unfortunately, the deer photos meant that I ran out of film for the almost perfect bear photo op that came along a little later — we all barricaded ourselves in the cabin, and he sat outside, staring at us through the window until he got bored and went away).
The beginning of the trail to Fish Camp, not too far away from (New) Abreu.
