Philmont News & Photo Service

For two summers, I was fortunate enough to work with a spectacular group of people — my colleagues in Philmont's News and Photo Service. In 1994, I was a photographer; in 1995, I ran the show as NPS Photo Manager, overseeing eight photographers and the daily operation of the lab.

Working conditions were a real battlefield climate — we took thousands of pictures (most of them with the trusty Pentax 67), and printed tens of thousands of prints; around 20,000 people pass through Philmont each summer, and all of them get at least one (free) 8x10" glossy photo of the group that they came with.

The 1995 NPS Team:

Back row (L to R): Jan Woolheater, Matt Taylor, Sam Kaszuba, Becca Tyndall, Connie Beil, Jim Beil, Rob Wood, and Chris Willis
Front row: Eason Bryan, Kutcha the Dog, Kevin Hogan, Lynne Fairchild, and Justin Willis

The 1994 NPS Team:

Left to right: Josh Jones, Nancy Allen, Jan Woolheater, Alex Price, Jim Beil, Charley Fairbanks, Kevin Hogan, Mark Dierker, Tom Waters, Jeremy Pritchett, and James Ewing. In tree: Dave Halbeck.

He wasn't a person, but Phil the Cat played an important role in 1994 NPS operations, mostly by shedding small white hairs all over the place (never let a cat in your darkroom!) and entertaining us all by doing disgusting things like eating squeeze cheese. Phil went MIA during the winter and did not return for the 1995 season.

I can barely remember my 1994 tentmate, but the group of folks I lived with during the summer of 1995 clicked pretty darn well. In this photo, each of us is holding/wearing items meant to signify our unique personality quirks (you figure it out). Scott-the-Elder (Robinson) changed my life that summer by introducing me to Brave Combo!

Randomness
NPS folks and their friends definitely know how to party down (taken during our 1995 Philfiesta at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp).
Jim (my boss) and Connie Beil.
Justin Willis, striking a Serious Artiste pose. Justin was one of my photographers in '95; he took the Photo Manager job the following summer.
The happy NPS family (Justin, Rob, me, Becca, and Eason) at the Rich Cabins Philfiesta.

Audra, a Villa Philmonte tour guide. (And no, I don't care what subliminal message you think I'm trying to get across with the position of the backlighting . . .)
