Dawson, New Mexico

Drive out of Philmont down Highway 64 towards Raton, and a road branches off on the left to Dawson. At one time, Dawson was a thriving coal-mining town, home to more than 6,000 people. Two major accidents (in 1913 and 1923) killed 385 men, who rest in the cemetery that is today the town's most noteworthy feature. When the mine was closed in 1950, the Phelps Dodge company sold most of the town; only the cemetery, a few scattered buildings, and some impressively large-scale mining ruins remain today.

Dawson Ruins

Taken standing inside what would appear to be the "Coal Washer" building pictured on the Dawson - New Mexico Ghost Town page. Lines of coke ovens (and huge piles of coal dust) stretch back towards the smoke stack in the distance.

Remains of a Dawsonian basement?
