Membership

Becoming a student member in IEEE is the first step toward becoming a professional electrical/computer engineer. In addition to becoming a card-caring member of the largest professional engineering organization in the world, you will receive a wide array of direct benefits. The membership includes three free magazine subscriptions from IEEE (Potentials, XPlore, and Spectrum), which feature quite interesting reading about recent advances in electrical engineering. You gain access to a wide array of technical information from IEEE (even IEEE.tv!) as well as information about career opportunities. Finally, you gain access to IEEE conferences, exclusive IEEE scholarships – and of course an email address @ieee.org

In addition to such benefits provided by the national organization, the Berkeley student branch provides a good number of benefits to IEEE members. The student branch controls two rooms in Cory: the Moore Room and the IEEE Lab. The Moore Room is the place to go in Cory when you tire of studying and just need to take a break. It features a good deal of couches (perfect for those necessary short naps), and a ping-pong table. An X-BOX and foosball table will soon become a part of the Room as well. While anyone can utilize the room, the free ball rental is restricted to members.

The branch lab features electronic and computer equipment, as well as a plethora of textbooks. We allow student members to check-out the textbooks and receive (a reasonable amount of) electronic equipment (wires, resistors, transistors, diodes, etc.) free of charge. The lab further includes soldering irons, breadboards, and oscilloscopes (effectively a mini-EE40 lab). Our computer systems also stand out: we have six computers featuring a wide range of software (Matlab, Office, Visual Studio, Labview, Solid Works, Lab Bench, and Xilinx ISE) for students to use. Two of the computers are connecting to the Xilinx CalLinx FPGA boards (the same devices in the CS 150) - allowing anyone to work with customizable hardware even when they don’t have access to 125 Cory (or when that lab is overcrowded). All students can use the equipment, but as a member, you will receive priority access.

Finally, as a member, you will receive 500 MB of ad-free webspace on the branch’s fast, Internet2 connected servers. The student branch has many social activities (kayaking, bowling, climbing, ice cream) – and members receive a discount (sometimes as high as 100%). Finally, there are free monthly lunches in the Moore Room for IEEE members.
