Second General IEEE Meeting

Come to our Second General Meeting, September 19 at 6:30pm in the Wozniak Lounge! Like the last meeting, there will be a keynote speaker and IEEE officers on hand to talk about upcoming events and to answer any questions you might have.

UC Berkeley IEEE featured in IEEE Potentials!

Thank you to Elizabeth Johnson, the editor of IEEE Potentials for writing an excellent article on the work we do here at UC Berkeley IEEE. The article can be viewed here.

IEEE Newsletter Vol. 1 Issue 3

This is the last newsletter of the year! Once again, we'd like to thank Andrew Ma for bringing the IEEE newsletter to life, and we look forward to continuing it next year. See it here.

IEEE receives 7th place in IEEE's International Programming Contest

Thanks to Ken Elkabany and Aaron Staley, UC Berkeley beat out 40 other teams in a grueling 24-hour programming contest. UC Berkeley was the only West Coast team to place in the top 10.

UC Berkeley's Annual SPAC

The annual student professional awareness conference was a tremendous success drawing over 110 students featuring speakers from National Instruments and KLA Tencor. Thanks to Christine Lo, Irving Lin, and Sushant Shankar for organizing the event. Thanks to our Oakland East-Bay section, Ratheon, National Semiconductor, and Microsoft for making this event free to all students.

IEEE Wins National Darrel Chong Student Activity Award

President John Torous and Vice-President Ken Elkabany were invited to Boston for the bi-annual IEEE Student Activity Committee Conference to give a talk about the Hands on Practical Electronics (HOPE) Program, and in the process, received the Darrel Chong Gold Award. The award is given to exemplary student activities around the world, specifically those that foster "knowledge sharing" among students. Their powerpoint presentation can be downloaded here.

High School HOPE Course Completed

IEEE's Hands on Electronics DeCal and High School Program recently changed its name to Hands on Practical Electronics (HOPE). While the name may be new, the goals of the program remain the same: introducing electrical engineering in a fun, intuitive, and of course hands on manner to freshmen EECS majors, as well as students studying humanities and local high school students who otherwise would not be exposed to this subject. Currently, Berkeley IEEE is teaching its third semester of Hands on Practical Electronics to twenty five Berkeley students, and is preparing to start a second high school at Oakland Tech, in Oakland. Berkeley IEEE is also working with Stanford University’s IEEE branch to start a similar course for their students.

General Meeting

Our first general meeting went great with over 40 students coming to hear our guest speaker, Professor Katz, speak about network reliability. Afterwards students socialized over free sushi and pizza.

Welcome to those who read about our Electronics Class in IEEE's The Institute

The response from the article has been overwhelming. We have received positive comments and interest from universities and individuals alike around the globe. If you have yet to receive a response from us, don't worry, we are trying to respond as thoroughly as possible. For a program that only began a year ago, we are excited that so many people want to start similar programs in the spirit of Hands on Electronics. For more information see our decal page.

Spring Membership Drive

We are about to launch our Spring semester membership drive. All UC Berkeley Engineers are eligible to join our IEEE student branch and also become members of national IEEE. National members receive numerous benefits as descrbed here. Look for our table in Cory Hall or stop by our lab (246 Cory) for more information. Limited officer positions are also available for dedicated students.

Windows Programming Decal

This semester, IEEE will be hosting a second decal titled "Using Microsoft Technologies to Program for the Windows Operating System." The course will cover Microsoft's .NET framework, Visual Studio 2005, developing for mobile devices such as PDAs, and most importantly, the C# programming language. The curriculum is tailored to students who have a fair understanding of programming (cs61a and cs61b are prerequisites) and are interested in applying their skills on the Windows platform. Microsoft Corporation is sponsoring the decal and will be providing free copies of Visual Studio 2005, as well as textbooks. The course will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 5-6pm.

IEEE Wins $1500 Student Enterprise Award for Robotics Competition

IEEE Nationals awarded $1500 to the UC Berkeley IEEE Student Branch for our plan to host a robotics competition this semester. IEEE officers are working with Professor Fearing and his lab group to create this new exciting competition. Students will design their robots in Solidworks, program them, and then compete against other teams.

New Student Lab Opens Next Week

IEEE will be opening its lab in 246 Cory featuring brand new furniture, computers, and equipment. We will have computers equiped with all instructional software and workstations for ee40 and cs150. Come peruse our extensive library, or stop by and grab some snacks. The lab is open 24 hours for your late night programming and lab adventures.

Back from the Slopes

The IEEE ski trip was a grand success. We had twenty members join us on this exciting trip. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, IEEE members discussed many creative ideas for the upcoming semester. Pictures coming soon!
Notable events:

Ski Trip

Ready to have fun in the snow? IEEE members are welcome to come on our annual ski trip. We'll leave Friday night, stay in Reno, and head to Northstar in the morning.

General Meeting

Join us for our second general meeting! Professor Papadimitriou will be speaking, and sushi will be served.

Bowling Night

Meet at the Downtown Berkeley BART station at 9:30 P.M. Bowling will start at 10:00 P.M. Bring your Cal ID. Admission is free!

New Student Lab

IEEE will soon be moving from our lab in 204B Cory to a brand new lab in 246 Cory. We are building this lab from the carpet up so we can ensure that it meets the needs of all of our students. Plans are to feature many new PC workstations, a new lab bench for projects, and an expanded library. Stop by and take a look!
